When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a
very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with
golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them
into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the
open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students
again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the
Jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once
More if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous
“YES”.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the
table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you
to recognize that this jar represents you life. The golf balls are
the important things – your family, your children, your health,
your friends, and your favorite passions – things that if
everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would
still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
House, and your car.

The sand is everything else – the small stuff. “If you put the
sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the
pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on
the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are
important.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children! Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your wife/husband/lover/friend out to dinner. Maybe even
play another 18. There is always time to clean the house and
fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and enquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just
goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there
is always room for a couple cups of coffee with a friend.”

Please share this with your coffee friend …. I just did.

1 Great Tip to Motivate Yourself into Action

So you can't get motivated to do something how about this great tip:

I'm presuming you're sat down reading this either on your phone or at your pc/laptop or ipad so firstly stretch one of your arms straight up in the air, now try and stretch a little further go on you can do it. Remember each game is 90 minutes plus some extra time in some cases so you have no excuses to get things done or enjoy the time to yourself.

Below is a list of things you can do instead, as ever, let me know how you get on:

1. Your family loves footie and you love socialising and hosting why not throw a BBQ or party? That way your family still gets to enjoy the footie and you get to do what you love. You then have an excuse to go in and out of the room where the footie is being watched and pop back to the kitchen/dining room/garden. I love planning and throwing a party. Get to know your neighbours or get all your friends to come to you saves having to make time after the World Cup has finished and spend all those precious weekends traipsing around the county/country.

2. If it’s sunny sunbathe. BIG IF…

3. Sort out the garage when there are lots of games on (e.g at the weekends). You will thank me next winter when you can park your car in there and spend 10 minutes extra time in bed as you don’t have to de-ice it!

4. Go on holiday there are some seriously good deals out there at the moment – take advantage of the fact that a lot of people like to stay in and watch the footie in the comfort of their own home.

5. Declutter a room whilst your family is watching footie in another room. Set a timer for 90 minutes see if you can win at your own game!

6. Have some ME TIME spend 90 minutes on your own. Bliss! Do absolutely nothing.

7. Sort out the loft! There will be no queues at the tip either!

8. Go to the beauticians/get your hair cut.

9. Go out and have a coffee somewhere.

10. Go to the cinema – you can guarantee there won’t be many there!

11. Each week decide on one room that you are going to declutter, spring clean and organise. By the end of the World Cup four rooms will be ready for Summer and you can spend the rest of it outside enjoying the holidays and weather.

12. Go shopping – again a given the shops will be quiet especially when England are playing!

13. Weed and mow your garden.

14. Do something you’ve never done in your home town/city take a guided tour and find out something about where you live that you didn’t know.

15. If you’re single now is a good time to find that special person especially if you are looking for that someone else who has other interests than football. I guarantee that person will be at the gym, shopping, visiting a museum, having a coffee whilst the footie is on…let me know how you get on!

16. Go to the gym – bet there are a couple of treadmills free.

17. Purge your filing!

18. Go to the park.

19. Clean the car.

20. Sort out your finances!

21. Try a different leisure pursuit or sport: horse riding, surfing, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc

22. Do your accounts. Boy will you thank me in January 2011!

23. Plan the next 4 weeks to finish one unfinished project that has been hanging around for months.

24. Sort out your photos into albums or put them on to a digital frame.

25. Back your photos up!

26. Sort out your clothes – you only wear 20% of them 80% of the time anyway.

27. Do your ironing. Including the clothes languishing at the bottom of the pile!

28. Upload all those CDs on to your iPod.

29. Go for a swim – lanes will be empty - all the kids will be watching football!

30. Go for a run.

31. Visit an art gallery or museum you’ve always wanted to do.

32. Sort out the files on your PC, laptop.

33. Purge and answer your emails.

34. Purge your phone address book, Face book and Twitter. Think quality not quantity.

35. Paint that room that really needs decorating!

36. Plan the rest of the year – when and where you’re going on holiday, events, theatre, concerts etc.

37. Go for a walk.

38. Start reading that book you’ve been itching to start…or finish that book you’ve started!

39. Read your favourite magazine.

40. Go to the beach.

41. Write a business plan and take action – by the time the next World Cup comes around who knows who and where you’ll be…

42. Go to bed!

43. Go for a soak in the bath!

44. Watch a movie or DVD in another room, or catch up on your recorded programmes and films.

45. Hold an anti-football party/lunch or dinner. Join up with friends and family who don’t want to watch it.

46. Impress your family learn the rules of football and buy your favourite team’s top even if it isn’t their choice of team!

47. If you missed them in the Twitterverse here they are again:-

Tip 1 - only put 3 things a day on your "to do" list. Once you've completed these 3 start over...

Tip 2 - take 10 minutes at the end of your work day and plan tomorrow. Tell me tomorrow night how great your day was.

Tip 3 - Decide what you're wearing tomorrow before you go to bed and in the morning you can have 5 more minutes' sleep! Do this for your children too...

Tip 4 - set the table for breakfast now and have another 5 mins in bed in the morning!

Caroline O'Neill is a life strategist who aims to help you save time, gain more energy and money. Here are my top 5 tips for home workers and the self-employed to make for a fabulous Bank Holiday weekend:-

1. Stop working tonight - set yourself some boundaries. If you were an employee for a company they wouldn't be asking you in over the weekend unless they paid you "double bubble" so why work in your own office this weekend?

2. Physically close your workspace down, be it closing your laptop, shutting your desk bureau, chucking all the papers in to a pile and shoving into a cupboard, switching your PC off (OK I'll let you have your CrackBerrys and iPhones etc), shut your office door and walk away until Tuesday morning. You will get distracted if you see your office papers, PC etc.

3. Plan next week this afternoon - the best business people all plan ahead on a Friday then switch off and enjoy the weekend.

4. Recharge your batteries this weekend, do what you love (go out walking, socialising, gardening, to the gym etc) or do what you have been wanting to get finished in your home for a while. Rememeber we are switching off and recharging.

5. Knock off early - YOU'RE THE BOSS, you deserve it! I am - in fact I'm having a half day and going to spend the weekend enjoying an evening at Sex and the City, a school reunion on Saturday and a day at the local fair on Monday with my family (www.richmond.org.uk). What are you going to do that you love?

Hard to do - send me an email to Caroline@carolineoneil.co.uk or tweet me if you struggle with this over the weekend. I promise to reply but I'm not taking phone calls as it's my weekend off!

5 Tips for a Great Work/Life Balance

When you work from home there is always a fine line between work and life balance. Here are my 5 essential tips to help you balance your work and personal life.

1. Try and get a dedicated office space - if you can't stretch to your own room start off like I did 10 years ago with a bureau from Ikea - I now work from a large room and find I have so many more exciting ideas and lots of space to flesh them out!

2. Keep your work-related stuff IN your dedicated work space, not spread around your home. Your lounge is for lounging, your bedroom for sleeping and like they say on MTV Cribs "this is where the magic happens" etc! Do not let others spill their stuff IN either. You will find you will gain more focus and get more done which means more profits!

3. Surround yourself with inspirational images, not too many of the family perhaps just one kids picture from school and a framed photo of your loved ones on your desk so you focus on what your reasons for working: my reasons for to give my family an exceptional lifestyle and financial freedom. What are yours?

4. They say "a tidy desk is a tidy mind" - most large corporates insist on a clear desk policy when you leave the office at the end of the day, one of the reasons is obviously security but you will find that you work so much more productively the next day when you walk in and there is a clear slate to work on.

5. At the end of your "office day" remember to physically close your office door whether that door is in a dedicated home office or you work from a laptop on the kitchen table - close the laptop down. Then go play with your kids, go to the gym whatever you do for leisure.

Try one of these tips and let me know the results TODAY - let me know tomorrow what happens, how you feel, what you do and is your mind clearer? Call Caroline on 0780 313 6023 if you want to work more productively and spend more time your family and on the nicer things in life. I love watching Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp and I am bit of a property developer myself having bought and sold 9 times in the past 15 years, from my first property, a ground floor bedroom garden flat in London eventually trading up and up the property ladder to my forever house here in my home town of Richmond. I have also rented out a gorgeous cottage (without any gaps in the rental income) in the same town so know my stuff. Here are my 5 easy ways to sell your property fast:-

1. Clear out the clutter from your property not only will it make the rooms appear more spacious it will save you money in the long term as you will not take it with you and clutter up your new home!

2. A feng shui tip here: ensure that your house no. or name is clearly visible from the roadside/pavement - if not how can people actually find you? Maybe this is the reason why your house isn't getting any viewings?

3. The front of your property is the first impression people see. It is said that prospective buyers or tenants make their minds up before they even step inside. Ensure that the front of your property is the most desirable in the street. Spruce it up, polish the door number and put some fresh planters outside. Make that first impression a lasting one!

4. If your property has been languishing on the market for a while redecorate in neutral tones the "BMW" (beige, magnolia, white) look really sells, I still charge a premium rate on my cottage as it has this decor - looks like new every time I need a new tenant.

5. Finally 3 important words before you get the estate or letting agent around: CLEAN, CLEAN AND THEN CLEAN AGAIN!

Getting your property ready for sale or rent can sometimes be an ordeal - Caroline O'Neill can help you with practical strategies to ensure that your property sells or rents fast! Call Caroline on 0780 313 6023 today!

5 Steps to Have More Time with Your Family

Speaking to a fellow mum last night and she leaves ALL the housework, paperwork, laundry, ironing and food shopping etc to do on Saturday! So these tips are for her and others struggling to spend more time with their family!

1. Get a cleaner, mine comes once a week for 2 hours for around £20 a week and does the cleaning, leaving me time to tidy. So worth it!!

2. Order your food shopping online. OK so it takes an hour the first time, 5 mins to do your food shopping basics after that. I buy the rest locally (butchers, bakers, candlestick makers) in the market town where I live and go for coffee afterwards knowing Tesco is taking care of the household staples (washing powder, loo rolls, cat food, dinner, nappies, chocolate).

3. Get your house sorted. I'm not talking making a show house, but put systems in place (more on that in another blog), know where your bits and bobs are. Spend just 15 mins each evening doing a little tidy - putting toys away, getting kids school uniforms and your clothes ready the night before, laundry & ironing every other day. So much easier that letting it all build up and spend your precious weekend sorting it.

4. Set aside an hour a week to sort out your finances - we do it (!) every week on a Monday night = less stress and bills paid on time/no charges/arguments etc.

5. Use the services of a VA or concierge service or just use your travel agent to book your summer holiday - spend your time on what you do best.

5. OK so this bit is boring BUT IT WORKS: create a schedule on your BlackBerry or iPhone of what needs doing around the house each week : food shopping (order online Thurs eve), laundry & ironing (Mon, Wed, Fri) tidying - 15 mins each night, finances - Monday evenings get together with other half for one hour reward a bottle of wine?, then spend the rest of the time with your family and on your hobbies...

Life is short, make the most of yours - if you are struggling with getting your life and home sorted call Caroline today on 0780 313 6023 to discuss creating a life plan that will change your life and make time for you and your family to enjoy the nicer things in life!

5 Reasons Why Time Outs Work for Grown Ups Too!

My boys have just had 4 weeks off school and nursery - it has flown by to be honest - we had lots of time together, they went to activities and I got a lot of work done working here and there I also did too much! I burnt the candle at both ends socially and completed 1.5k swimathon on Sunday (all crawl I might shout out). On Sunday and Monday I was soooo tired so today I have had a TIME OUT or ME TIME and here are my 5 reasons why:-

1. Exercise is good for you - we all know that BUT do you take time to do some? I swim a lot and today was no exception I swam straight after the school run, bish bosh job done, empty pool too which was cool! Now I am set up for whatever the day brings.

2. I then came home and did some tidying up/decluttering - house feels so much nicer and I feel less overwhelmed.

3. Take it easy to avoid burnout - have no agenda for the day or a couple of hours if you can - after soring the house out I went for a stroll into town and met my mum at a local coffee morning - great to see my mum and her friends taking life so easy - mainly women at this hopefully the men were at a golf or similar? I came home relaxed and chilled.

4. Spoil yourself - finished coffee had an overwhelming urge to purchase something so popped into the local Oxfam, not for clothes I may add, they have the most amazing book section, came out armed with 5 books for a tenner!

5. Just "BE" - I took my lunch and sat in my conservatory, which is built outside against a South facing wall - then moved the chair outside, as the sun was warm and all I could hear were birds and my cat purring. Totally chilled now and back to the PC to write this blog.

If you struggling with your life/work balance, too much work, untidy, being late, rushing around and everything is spiralling out of control contact Caroline on 0780 313 6023 for a FREE 30 minute life audit with some simple strategies to get your life back on track.

5 Steps to Help You Spring into Action!

WOW looks like another gorgeous sunny weekend here in Richmond, North Yorkshire. As you know the UK's weather can be unpredictable and I love when a warm weekend comes in unexpected. So what are you going to do today? Not working I trust? Or do you struggle to start things on your weekend? I find the sunshine really lifts and motivates me after a LONG snowy winter here up North. So today I'm venturing out into our lovely garden and starting to get it back up to scratch in readiness for our Summer - fingers crossed! If you struggle to get going even in the sunshine then follow these simple steps to get going:-

Step 1: Make a massive plan of all the things you need to do e.g. everything that's needs doing in the garden.

Step 2 Take just 3 items off your plan that are priority tasks and will make the most difference to your life. Write these on a piece of paper and put it up in, say, your kitchen.

Step 3: Use your kitchen timer, ping it for 30 mins and get going on what you want to do. If you enjoyed that do it again, and again...

Step 4: Team up with a buddy (I use this one a lot and rope my Hubbie in to help).

Step 5: As you complete your tasks Give yourself a reward - for example, afternoon tea in the garden or a hot bath at the end of the day.

Call Caroline for a free 30 minute session today on 0780 313 6023 if you still can't get going, or are spending too much time on tasks.

5 Feng Shui Tips for the Overworked and Unloved Self-Employed

1. Who are you sleeping with? Avoid placing your computer, laptop or even your Blackberry or your iPhone in your bedroom! Madonna and Guy Ritchie were said to have slept with their BlackBerrys under their pillows – and look how that panned out!

2. Avoid placing your PC in the top-right-hand corner of your desk as this indicates that you are married to your job. The only loving relationship you will have is with your PC!

3. If you are seeking success and, therefore, more profits avoid facing the wall.

4. Place a stone or an image of a mountain on your desk will give the impression of stability in your work.

5. If you want to lower your stress levels, wear blue or green, which are calming colours, or bring in plants, which represent prosperity.

Caroline O'Neill is a life strategist, speaker and author. For instance, mixing your office space with your bedroom is a big mistake. If you have your desk, or even just your laptop/BlackBerry/iPhone, in your bedroom it will affect your sleep and your love life (look at what happened to Guy Ritchie and Madonna both were said to sleep with their BlackBerrys under their pillows)! Move your work/equipment out of your bedroom NOW! The BEST place for your home office is near your front door.

• Secondly, your desk is the most important element of your home office and it’s placement determines your success or NOT! The BEST place for your desk is the “commanding position” diagonally aligned with your office door. It is preferable that your chair has a solid wall, rather than a window, behind it. Avoid having your desk in alignment with your office door, facing a wall or a corner or even a window. If your desk is located like this do not worry call me on 0780 313 6023 for a FREE 30 minute session to optimise your home office with Feng Shui for productivity, to attract more business (and therefore more money) and achieve success.

• Thirdly, DECLUTTER any paperwork and get organised. DO NOT clutter your office with piles of paperwork, sticky notes, files and other documents. Sorting and organising your office will reap amazing benefits alone. The same goes for your PC hardrive, emails, BlackBerry, iPhone etc. Clear them out regularly!

• Other areas to optimise are the wealth and career areas of your home office. Common remedies to attract wealth include placing a Jade or Money plant on your desk or installing a fish tank. .

• One last thing is you are working all hours and missed all the lovely sunshine this weekend your office could be in the “marriage” area and therefore you are married to your job/business…for more details contact Caroline

Caroline O’Neill has been practising Feng Shui herself since 1990s and was so amazed at its effects she studied it intensively and started her own business in 1999. Sine then Caroline has helped lots of people achieve big results faster and easier using many different strategies including Feng Shui. Caroline is giving away limited FREE 30 minute sessions this week on Optimising your Home Office. If you are struggling in your home office with any of the above-mentioned issues call Caroline today on 0780 313 6023.

5 Steps to Bring More Love and Passion into your Life...

Step 1: Who are you sleeping with? Katie Price AKA the model Jordan, threw her mattresss and bed out and now is happily remarried!

Step 2: Do you regularly sleep with your Crackberry I mean Blackberry or iPhone? Madonna and Guy Ritchie did and look at what happened to them! Leave the phones outside the bedroom and that goes too for the laptop, iPad, TV, notebook etc. Got my drift? You'll sleep so much better and please don't email me about the improvements in your love life! Worst thing I ever saw in a bedroom: 4 drawer metal filing cabinet - bloke was married to his job!

Step 3: Is your bedroom a sanctuary? If not, make it one now. If you are one of those people who are usually running around after Christmas in January preparing your yearly accounts and racing to submit your self assessment before the 31 January deadline, how about completing your accounts this month? Think how smug you will feel in December with the knowledge they are done and you can send them off to your accountants/submit to the Inland Revenue on time? If you are not optimising your time and your office environment call Caroline today on 0780 313 6023 for a free 30 minute session to discuss how you can optimise your working environment that will give you more time to spend on your business as well as more time on your leisure activities and quality time with your family.

Budget, Budget, Budget!

A 30 second blog: three words re yesterday's Budget "Budget, Budget, Budget". When I got up that day I said to myself it's going to be a great day today with an easy journey into York (there was hardly any traffic), easy parking (in fact I got parked right outside the venue) and the course was really good. Do we set ourselves up for self-fulfilling prophecies? Try thinking differently and more positively - it's really hard to do all of the time so how about putting it into practice some of the time and see if your days go smoother?
